Johnston Test Cell Group was established in 2002 as a successor company to J+J Metalfab Inc., and EMS Enterprises, Inc. which was founded in 1974 by Edward Johnston and his 2 sons, Michael and Stephen, as a manufacturer of augmenter acoustical pillows.

In 1974-75, EMS manufactured the augmenter pillows for the first air-cooled test cell and hush house augmenters built in the USA, which were designed for the US Navy by pioneer designer Gustav Getter.  The augmenter pillow design used in 1974 is still the current industry standard.   

J+J Metalfab was founded in 1983 by Edward Johnston and son, Stephen Johnston, as a manufacturer of test cell and hush house components, expanding the manufacturing capabilities of EMS.  J+J fabricated many different types of acoustical panels and pillows for test cells and hush houses worldwide, and various test facility components including prototype acoustical turning vanes for the USAF A/F37T-10 hush house. 

In 2002, Johnston Test Cell was founded by Edward Johnston, and acquired the assets of both predecessor companies.  JTC began offering complete fabrication and construction of complete test facility structures and acoustics, as well as repair, refurbishment, and maintenance of test facilities. 

Since Edward Johnston’s death in 2005, son Stephen Johnston has led the company, and has expanded the company’s services, which includes consulting, design, and turn-key test facility construction.
